Ed Quillen has a short history of compromises in U.S. politics in his column in today's Denver Post [May 29, 2005, "Compromise? How un-American"]. He writes, "All those compromises may have delayed the American Civil War, but in the end, they could not prevent it. Our system works pretty well when we're compromising about who gets what in a pork-barrel spending bill, but it runs into trouble handling those uncompromising moral positions."
