According to tribal officials the Ute tribes will not be implicated in the Abramoff scandal as reported in the Cortez Journal. From the article, "The Utes don't give money in exchange for political favors, a policy that prevents Southwest Colorado's two tribes from getting bilked out of millions of dollars, tribal officials say. 'Both tribes are very, very careful,' said Ray Kogovsek, president of the lobbying firm Kogovsek & Associates, which represents the Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute tribes. 'They don't have to buy access because they have a good congressional delegation.' But that was not the case for several Native American tribes in Michigan, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. They were allegedly cheated out of $66 million by lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his partner, consultant Michael Scanlon."
