Voters will get a chance to vote on the way that property taxes are calculated according to the Denver Post [August 16, 2003, "Amend. 32 appears headed for ballot"]. From the article, " Under the proposal, residential property would be assessed at 8 percent of its value for tax purposes beginning Jan. 1. Under current law, the residential rate is adjusted depending on commercial property values. The 1982 Gallagher Amendment to the state Constitution capped residential property taxes at no more than 45 percent of the state's entire annual property tax bill. Commercial property picks up the other 55 percent. The assessment on residential property dropped from 30 percent in 1983 to 7.96 percent this year, while commercial property is assessed at 29 percent of value."

Colorado voters will also get the opportunity to approve video gaming at racetracks around the state says the Denver Post [August 16, 2002, "November ballot will feature gambling proposal"]. From the article, "The measure would place 500 video lottery terminals - or VLTs - at each of the state's five racetracks in Arapahoe County, Commerce City, Loveland, Colorado Springs and Pueblo. The state would harvest 61 percent of the revenue from the lucrative, slot-like machines and use it for tourism promotion and open space protection."
