Jamie Zawinski - DNA Lounge - Webcasting Legalities "The laws related to the reproduction and distribution of music are very complicated, and there are a number of different organizations responsible for collecting royalties on behalf of the artists. In order to operate an internet radio station legally, one has to deal with a lot of different groups. " And that sums up a fantastic article from someone who has had to deal with all of this. And we at Jazz 88 know the pain. And I dedicate this link to Chris Sullivan (don't shoot me if that name is not right, Chris you know who you are), who heard me ranting about a month ago on this subject and tracked me down at Idyllwild Jazz In The Pines last month to chew the fat. This should help us both know what we're up against. More, pointing out key concepts that we have to grasp and that the RIAA and others use to confuse us...
Thanks to Doc for the link. |
How Does The Good Doctor Treat Quotes? I received an email from Diane Rouge today regarding my linkage to and quotage from her Nnenna Freelon interview awhile back (she's got another interview posted here). She was wondering about the consent needed to link to and quote from an interview like her's on the web. And that's a very good question. My role models, like Doc and Dave, use links and quotes as a foundation for their blogs (as does the entire weblogging world). Do they get permission before quoting? I can't imagine it, but I'm not actually a real journalist also. What exactly are the rules regarding quotes? When can (not) you quote? How much can you quote? Doc's always got good info on things like this, let's see what he says? [Later, a little research...] Freelance: "The only legal test is whether the amount you quoted diminishes the market value of the original." And they also say it's good to attribute...which I did with the link.
[and...] Nolo - When Copying Is Ok -- The 'Fair Use' Rule: They site several cases where it's OK, including a couple which fit my usage, News Reporting and Research and Scholarship. Although it a real reach to attach the word 'scholarship' to what I attempt on my show! |
Doc Respectfully Rocks the 911 Linkroll I must also thank Doc for the inspiring Friedman link today. He has a fantastic set of personal weblog observances from, knowing Doc, the best writers (weblog or otherwise) around, his 911 Linkroll. And he totally nailed my response to Bill Biggarts pictures, digital photos taken by Bill as the impossible unfolded around him (and through him to the camera), eventually encasing him. He died during the Tower 2 collapse. What a story. Thanks Doc, you rock. 12:23:42 AM ![]() |
