I Had No Idea That's What You Called My Group

I have to admit I'd never heard of the term 'Shared Services' before ("...an independent business services group provides human resources, payroll, finance and other support services to business units..."), but I think that's the kind of organization I work in. Still unclear. Anyway, the gist of this Computerworld article is that it might not be working out as planned (or some phase of implementing this kind of organization isn't as clear as it might have been before):

"...shared-services groups are supposed to produce cost savings by consolidating disparate support units into a single entity, and it’s not always clear “how much more bang for the buck you get through consolidating the IT organization,” said Stacy Brandom, senior vice president at J.P. Morgan Chase in New York."

While this article doesn't really make shared-service organizations clearer (to me), their lack of explanation makes me think I'm missing something core in the IT management area. Not that I'm management material anyway, but...

The article does shed some light on another area related to a project we've got going on around here. Jane Ann says about a GE Travel and Expense automation project...

"Her group has had solid success in digitizing and outsourcing some of its operations, including more than $200 million in travel savings, from automating travel and expense processing and holding the chief financial officers of each business unit accountable for their monthly travel spending, Westpheling said."

ABCNews.com: Iraq Official Suggests Bush Duel With Saddam

"U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan would be the referee for the duel, which should be held on neutral territory, Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan told Associated Press Television Network in an interview."

Big chuckle here on that story! Kind of fits the ol' wil' west thang we've been hearing from 'W'. Oh...maybe he didn't really mean it...

"Ramadan, wearing a green uniform and a black beret, made his remarks without giving any outward sign he was joking, although reporters who were present detected a note of irony in his voice."

And Jeff L. points us to even funnier headlines from that oh-so-serious of publications, The Onion: "Bush Seeks U.N. Support For 'U.S. Does Whatever It Wants' Plan"

Early Tweaks Needed to Dougs Memorial Weblog

Some things I need to add and change about The Doug Randall Memorial Weblog site:
  • Change the HTML title tag to match the weblog name. This will ensure that when people use search engine's like Google and search for Doug Randall, they'll get that page.
  • Add some general information about submitting remembrances, including getting permission to use names and email addresses.
  • Have some general links to pictures about Doug. Not just in the individual posts. Something that stays on the home page (or rotates automatically).
  • Same for links to any tunes or video of Doug on-line. I've got some of my own to publish and I hope we can get permission to publish a few of his tunes in MP3 format for others to download and listen to.

  • UUnet backbone problems slow down the Net [IDG InfoWorld]

I was seeing very slow connectivity to sites this morning, especially this weblog. Pages loading very slowly.

The Doug Randall Memorial Weblog - The Idea

The idea of The Doug Randall Memorial Weblog is to give Doug Randall a place on the World Wide Web. And to use that place to share rememberances of Doug's life and music with any and all who would like to learn about a man that inspired many people. The remembrances can take the form of words, pictures, and even music (in downloadable format). If others have written about Doug on the web, this will also be the place to quote and link to that writing. I'm not sure about copyright issues regarding posting music, especially from a mostly unheard artist like Doug, so I'd like to hear suggestions from readers.

I interviewed several friends and collegues of Doug on my radio show, The New Jazz Thing, on Jazz 88 on Thursday, September 26, 2002. I will also post those audio clips here as time permits.

If you would like to contribute written work or comment on this memorial, please send email to me at outlawv@aol.com. Please let me know if you would like your name and email address posted with your contributions...I want to be as discrete as you want me to be.

    Much Love...VO

    Jazz Blogs - Write Jazz

The idea behind Jazz Blogs would be very similar to the new Salon Blogs initiative.

"When you build your blog with Salon, you also become a part of the Salon Blogs community, and your blog will show up on special listings of recently updated and most-read blogs."

Jazz 88 listeners set up a place where they can write about what they hear on Jazz 88 and then branch out from there. Build a community of on-line writers sharing what they think about particular tunes, upcoming shows or shows they've seen, arts happenings...anything creative. These bloggers are all tied into a community that knows when it's members update and can feed off of each others writings.

A key to this will be getting the Jazz 88 playlist on-line and have that as it's own blog-like list that people can easily reference and link to...for instance, you hear a song while working on your computer, you go to the playlist to see what's playing, then you do a blog entry about the tune (why you like it, questions about the artist, other versions of the song...only limits are the creative mind), linking back to the playlist so folks can get more info (possible how to buy the tune, other tunes that were playing at the time, etc.).

Imagine an interface very much like this weblog, with a calendar on the side to go back to previous days. Imagine each tune (and PSA, PPR, etc.) being posted just like all the ones on this weblog, with the tune info (maybe link to purchase with proceeds to Jazz 88), date / time stamp, and a permalink that would allow web writers to point directly to that place in our play list. Just like webloggers are now doing all over the internet.

We have an opportunity to build this community of intelligent, free-thinking, improvisational people sharing what they love about the music we play, using the Jazz 88 playlist as a springboard for other Jazzy exploration.

The Arts And The New Jazz Thing

One way I've been thinking about stretching the show is in the area of general arts. I've always kind of been open to this and I've brought in poets, sound artists, and other non-music related, but always Jazzy (and improvisational) guests onto the show. In particular now, I'm wanting to tie in arts in the schools with the show, getting the word out, displaying kid art on the website, talking on-air (and recorded) with kids making art (and those leading them). This could be particularly productive for me in that I've got to spend a whole lot of time a school these days (with a new kindergartner starting his educational journey). Ideas...

Boys school is planning a series of field trips this year, including a Musical Petting Zoo (in conjunction with the San Diego Symphony) and a CYT production of Cinderella (please be the R&H version, can't find CYT info online). Some ideas would be to talk with the leaders of these efforts on the air to give them some exposure, do field recording of the event and the children's reaction to it, and then let kids and parents (listeners with giving potential) know when I would be playing some of the recordings on the air in a feature about the event.

Morning Brain Dump - The New Jazz Thing Style

It's a usual thing for me to wake up (and usually go to bed) with lots of ideas floating around my head. It's mostly things that didn't get done, and there are a lot of those these days, but in some cases it's looking forward. Specifically right now, I'm trying to find just a few important things to spend a little extended time thinking about while on an Up(country) coming break from the normal chaos. The direction of the show and this blog are always my mind. Additionally, the direction of the Jazz 88 website and station are forefront...there's a meeting this evening on bringing in some outside help on site design and other things I know little about...it will be nice to be on the other side of the hot seat on an IT-like presentation. And I'm committed to helping the station in new directions that are slowly being displayed.
