The colors, by the way, of the 'Moon and Mars' series and other night sky pictures that I've been making recently, are not manipulated. I set the camera for incandescent white balance (2650K) to keep the low pressure sodium lamps that abound in my neighborhood, from looking too green. This gives an intense blue to the sky, which is often illuminated by the sun reflected off the moon.

Just like daylight, the 'moonlight' is scattered by our atmosphere so the sky appears blue. The high ISO sensitivity (usually 1600) of the ccd picks up on this blue which is barely visible to our naked eyes. Do you remember how weird-yellow sodium lamps looked when they first came on the scene? They seem normal now, huh?
