Just got a note from Erik Gauger, whose Notes From the Road is a site to behold. So far I've gleefully read two of his entries (which are all geographically sorted, rather than by time as are weblogs.) Both entries are about forboding, Californian bodies of water: the LA river (and being as the poorest person living in Malibu) and the Salton Sea.

The latter story taught me more than I ever wanted to know about tilapia (which, until now, I kind of liked) and was accompanied by a wonderful photograph (as are all of Erik's pages.) By the way, Erik shoots large format film with a Toyo AX fitted with a 75mm f/4.5 Superangulon. He makes me want to shoot more film, but it's quite an upgrade from my 4X5 jalopy:
