This OJR article says that the newspaper industry is a $55 billion one.
It's fairly inevitable that online news is going to move toward a combination of newspapers, blogs, and reputation servers... the lines between journalists and amateur bloggers will get hazier and hazier as reputation servers help the amateurs achieve credibility on the same order as the "official" journalists (OJs). There will be little practical difference. OJs will start blogs, and many of the best bloggers will become sanctioned/hired by the big news corps and become OJs. The lines will get fuzzy.
Money will be made in that intersection. Dave says how he think it will happen. I think the details are probably wrong, but the point is right. This intersection is where a lot of money will be made on the Internet.
