Organized religions which encourage people to follow religion-supplied leaders like a flock of sheep following their shepherd are a menace. Do we really need to encourage people to follow the moral teachings of someone like this? The simple fact is that the leaders of organized religions are no better than anyone else. Probably no worse either, on average, but that isn't enough to make them leaders.
I personally have a soft spot in my heart for Zen Buddhism, which doesn't represent its teachers as the earthly representatives of God, but rather as people have "been there and done that" on the path of meditation, and who can help others do the same. Not unlike the way someone with a Ph.D. in mathematics may be of use to someone trying to learn mathematics. That is, I don't condemn religion per se as a phenomenon, but I do condemn people's willingness to use it as an excuse to set up someone else to do their moral thinking for them.
