In case you haven't already heard, Microsoft has been ordered to pay $521 million for patent infringement. [Seattle Times]

But they vow to fight it. [CRN.com]

This February 23, 2003 article on News.com links to an article from Microsoft Research, posted on the stanford.edu domain. News.com's take is that the article "concluded that DRM technology would likely fail because of consumer resistance to content protection and acceptance of file trading." Probably some Stanford interns did most or all of the work. (Correction, I originally thought there was something wrong with the link, but there isn't.) I am posting it for your benefit, dear reader, since I just found it today, although it will be a few days before I have a chance to read it myself.

A worthwhile, short rant on patents from a venture capital perspective. [VentureBlog]

According to the rant VC's see patents primarily as defensive and would rather fund a business than a patent portfolio. As someone who has personally funded his own startup, I couldn't agree more.
