Closed Is Open. Reading Between the Lines as Dave Fester, General Manager of the Windows Digital Media Division, Lays Out Microsoft's Shamelessly Orwellian Party Line Regarding Digital Music [Daring Fireball]
Great writing, John! Microsoft likes choice, Microsoft users wants choice, in everything!.... except in: Desktop Operating Systems, Server Operating Systems, Word Processors, Spreadsheets, Presentation programs, Programing Languages, Scripting Languages, Video Players, Handheld Operating System, Planning Software, Web Browsers, Charting Software, Media Formats, Smartphone Operating System, HTML editors, Streaming formats, Instant Messaging, Internet Service Providers, etc. etc.... The rest you can have. (Microsoft has the right to increase this list as it sees fit.)

New Logo inside of Panther. My wife already has it in her hands with a T-Shirt that she says is "ugly". I just have to wait until tomorrow...

The End of the Oil Age "The Stone Age did not end for lack of stone, and the Oil Age will end long before the world runs out of oil." [Slashdot]
This will be the best thing for Venezuela, the destruction of Father/State by the depletion of its means. I hope it happens very soon so that I, or, at least, my children, can see Venezuela's real potential.

Interesting article on Yahoo about the Magazine publishing industry. This is an industry that pretends to employ top writing and creative talent, and where is it? In the prehistory of technology and ideas... They don't know how to do a proper distribution, they don't know how to do proper pricing, they can't even seal a deal with a client in a decent amount of time (eight weeks for a subscription? don't make me laugh). At the end, we will hear how electronic publishing killed this industry, but, as is the case with Music publishing, is all a lie. This is an industry that doesn't understand the most basic business practices. How many magazine subscriptions do you have? I, currently, have only three (out of more than 15 I had in the early 90s). One is 2600 for which I have a lifetime subscription, the other two are MacAddict and Car & Driver. Every renewal is a decision... Am I really enjoying this? I didn't renew MWJ precisely for the reasons exposed in the article (charging more to your better clients)...

Cringley on Microsoft and Linux The lack of a roadmap for Open Source means that there can be dozens of similar projects, some being born, some dying, and others forking into new identities. Since there is no single architect for Open Source, these projects all have to compete for manpower and user interest. Most Open Source projects die, but when they do, it is a death Darwin would understand. Every death improves the software bloodline. [Slashdot]
