a "gay American" and resigned. "I am here today because,
shamefully, I engaged in an adult consensual affair with
another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony," he said.

I wonder if it would have made any difference if he hasn't been married. I mean as it is, he was an adulterer, which is a sin in the US, and a hypocrite, which should be a sin everywhere.
