Great! Whenever Dell has criticized Apple the latter has been more successful than before... This is great news.

Paolo: "I have decided that vintage iPods are cool." [Scripting News]
The Vintage iPod Club. Interesting. Is it necessary, to be a member, not to have bought another iPod? I have one of the earliest 5GB iPods, not only that, I had it engraved with my initials as a sign that I will never sell it. I now have a 20GB iPod and plan to buy a 512MB iPod Shuffle and later a 1GB iPod Shuffle... So, do I belong to the club or not? Ah, never mind, as Groucho Marx use to say: "I would never belong to a club that accepted people like me as a member."
Update: I'll get my 512MB tomorrow! Oh Joy! The 1GB can't be found, but I'll get one eventually.

Doc Searls: "Apple is the Microsoft of music." [Scripting News]
I got to answer to this again, it is so misguided. While it is true that Apple may become the Microsoft of Music it is several years away from doing that. Readers of this blog have heard this argument time and time again, obviously I do not have enough readers  . Apple is not a Monopoly, far from it. Not only does it need a few more percentage points (in the Mp3 player market, there is no way Apple could be a monopoly in the Music market), it needs something it will never achieve; A high barrier of entry. Anyone can make an Mp3 player. Microsoft could do it, Sony could do it, hundreds of companies can and have done it. Apple is just successful at it. To be the Microsoft of Music, Apple will have to first become a Monopoly and then act illegally . It is sad to see people like Doc doing Microsoft's dirty work for them. They are trying to convince us that the online stores that only work on Windows are all about choice and good for the consumer. This could end up with everybody having to buy a Windows machine just to hear music... How sad that people fall for these petty tricks.
