Sony learned its lesson in digital music, says exec. Sony Corp. has learned several lessons from its reluctance to quickly embrace music download services and is now working hard to make up ground against the dominance of competitors such as Apple, a senior executive said on Thursday. [MacCentral News]
They learn their lesson? They are making the same mistake again! Sony's Connect music store uses ATRAC as a format, not even WMA. They think they are imitating Apple, but their store only work on Windows. No differentiation except the weird format. What I would do if I was the CEO of Sony is to make the more open store there is. Authorize a machine to download the ATRAC and transform it into Mp3 (without the hassle of going thru a CD, but with a similar loss of quality), reduce the price of songs, and make the most compatible store and Mp3 player out there (plays all formats it can, licensing from Apple and Microsoft as necessary). And, then, use my brand to crush the competition. Exclusive deals with artists? Sony is a Music label! Incredible well designed hardware and software? Sony has done good hardware before, but the software always suck. Let's hire some good programers, let's move the store to Mac and Linux, let's even support Vogg Orbis. Actually, if DRM could be done in Vogg Orbis, that would be the way I would go...
