Plenty of Cowbell, a long-time Boing Boing reader, is "desperate to prove that this is a big deal and that bloggers such as Cory..." [Scripting News]
Even though Google has decrease in my esteem due to firing an employee, this is a nonstarter issue for me. First, the toolbar doesn't work in anything but Internet Explorer, if you are still using that (or Outlook) you deserve anything that happens to you. The comparison with smarttags is misplaced and is another attempt by Micro$ucks minions to cloud the issue that they are a monopoly (Google is not and can't ever be one, at least not in Search or "toolbars." Why? No Barrier of Entry!). It isn't a big deal, most of the time it does nothing at all... If you are worried, the solution is simple... Advice your users to stop using Internet Explorer or Windows. It's good for them anyway.

Why John Gilmore won't show his ID at airports. "Are they just basically saying we just can't travel without identity papers? If that's true, then I'd rather see us go through a real debate that says we want to introduce required identity papers in our society rather than trying to legislate it through the back door through regulations that say there's not any other way to get around," Gilmore said. "Basically what they want is a show of obedience."
