Why does PC support stink? Ask Symantec. CNET News.com's Charles Cooper recounts how Symantec put in an Oscar-losing performance when his hard drive came under attack. [CNET News.com]
While the article is good, the final question (whether we will be better off once Micro$ucks provides its own antivirus technology) is easy to answer. No. Micro$ucks behaves exactly like any other software company, and it isn't hard to know why. The other companies imitate Micro$oft's every move, from User Licenses to support to upgrade cycles and costs. It is reasonable to imitate success, it is not reasonable to keep feeding that success without being heard. Microsoft has a history of not listening to clients, whether it is in support for old versions of Windows, or availability of Internet Explorer or security updates. Microsoft reasonably is pushing us to buy the latest version of Windows, but many times they go way too far. As the case in music, you can't use the music stores without the latest Windows. Even iTunes support more versions of Windows than the Microsoft's promoted stores. That's one reason it is way ahead of them in selling digital music. Will they ever learn?
