How do we know VoIP will prevail? There is already a do it yourself Open Source solution...

A guide to VoIP and Asterisk.

With its low price, VoIP has become an attractive alternative to traditional landlines. The possibilities seem endless: you can set up virtual numbers, toll-free numbers, use softphone applications to call from your PC, even make calls from your home phone when on the road. While basic VoIP service can provide some of these features, the open-source PBX application Asterisk allows you to configure your phone system to your heart's content.

[Asterisk] supports VoIP in all three flavors: SIP, h323, and IAX. It also supports a wide range of hardware that allows you to terminate your Asterisk PBX from a POTS line to a T1.

Confused by the alphabet soup? This guide will bring you up to speed on VoIP lingo and help you to get your home or small business network up in no time flat.
