Warning to my old readers: In this post I'll be saying nice things about a Microsoft product. I haven't lost my mind, it is good. Don't have a heart attack Scoble! So, I did get Da Phone, even though it has its drawbacks, I am enjoying it immensely. As Jerry said the screen is mediocre at best, the battery... You kind of wonder why they put one in! It last so little. But, nevertheless, I am impressed with the Pocket PC (yes, the part Microsoft did!) Windows Mobile (I am using the 2003 version, have no idea whether I can get the 2005 version in this thing) is extremely nice. Ages ahead of anything Palm has to offer. Browsing, email, etc are only hampered by the screen size and resolution, the first being a trade off for portability. Damn, you can even see your PC Screen through Terminal Services (aka Remote Desktop). Mighty Nice. The phone isn't wonderful, here Nokia has everybody beaten with Symbian, so much so, that I don't think I'll get rid of my 7610. I'll just use the SX66 when PDA and connectivity features overcome the size and phone functionality, for example, when travelling. Sometimes I may carry both! I am going to Madrid (Holiday in Spain) and I am not brining my laptop. My Vodafone number will be in the 7610 and my Digitel number in the SX66. One minor disappointment is that it doesn't have a camera. I thought it did, because there is a lot of confusion about models that look the same but aren't. Also, I can only connect a Bluetooth headset to the phone, not to all the audio. There maybe ways around that but I still haven't found them (Hey, it's been only one day!). Among the killer features are the seamless transition from Wi-Fi to GPRS and the handwritten recognition. Yes, it is much better than the Newton. It recognizes letters when I write in spanish with an amazing precision. So much so, that it may slow me down on learning to use the hidden keyboard. I must to practice with it to get good at it. Navigation and the such are confusing, and some features are really hard to get to (No battery level in the main display, no task switching, no calculator (found it!).... What were they thinking? All those things are extra).
Skype works great through Wi-Fi but is unusable through GPRS. I suspect there is something fishy in there. It should be good enough for one call, but it isn't. Maybe mobile operators are doing something to preserve their old fashion voice network. They will fail, I just have to wait... Overall, I am happy with the new gadget, it can do so much that I don't really care how big it is.
