The Secretary of Defense, José Vicente Rangel, ex-journalist and ex-presidential candidate, is the first person from the government to respond to the announcement of the general strike. He is insisting that everything is "normal" even if it is clear that isn't true.
One comment: He is looking old, tired, and afraid. It's scary to think that such a person is supposed to be in command of this situation.

Venezuela's Chavez Slams Oil Strike

``Do you know of any businessman, politician, unionist, or church leader who has an ongoing dialogue with Chavez?'' analyst Anibal Romero asked in a televised interview Wednesday. ``He has no idea of what the concept of a loyal opposition is about.''

Others noted those against Chavez have yet to organize.

``It's an opposition without parties, only of people who despise Chavez. It's an immature group, with no parties to follow,'' said Luis Vicente Leon, director of the Datanalisis polling firm. In the PDVSA dispute, ``the opposition saw a big chance to draw a last breath. It was the moment to revive itself,'' he said.

Still, Leon added, ``Chavez, in a very clumsy way, thought he was strong enough to control the situation, and obviously it got out of control.''

An army general -- the fifth officer in recent months -- accused Chavez of politicizing the armed forces and lying to Venezuelans about the presence of Colombian guerrillas along Venezuela's western frontier.

``Mr. President, you have betrayed the country,'' Brig. Gen. Nestor Gonzalez Gonzalez told a news conference. ``Respect the national armed forces.''

Venezuela in an indefinite general strike...

Despite the government confidence in normalcy, the National workers union has declared a General strike for an indefinite time. This is it then... Either Chavez leaves or the workers walk down. It's an impressive move, but I don't know if it will be successful. I hope it will, but I wonder about indefinite strikes. They are hard on people and as they go on, there may be a lot of problems. If you believe in God, pray for us and if you don't wish us luck.

Chavez go to Habana to be the first lady

That was in a banner in one of the two huge demonstrations today. The government keeps spreading lies, but i don't think anyone believes them. I think we will return to work tomorrow, we are not exporting oil. Ouch, that's got to hurt!

While the secretary of interior is saying everything is normal, the images in TV show confrontation of police against anti government protesters.

The interior secretary is talking on TV, is not a obligatory transmission, but all the stations are transmitting it as a news even. The pot banging has started the first time in the day. The lies keep spreading.

There is threat of declaring a state of emergency. This will be a big mistake, since an incompetent government can't stop a whole population. The government keeps saying everything is normal, this is so obviously a lie, that I can't comprehend what the strategy is.

The venezuelan government has to give up!

Today has been a quiet day. More things are close than yesterday and the government has realize the answer through force television transmissions was counter producing. They have been quiet today. The opposition has taken to the streets. The threat of a longer strike is looming in the horizon. The government has to think carefully what to do next.

General Strike in Venezuela to Extend Another Day

Not a good article in the New York Times it claims the strike was less successful than the December one just because the streets were less empty, they were still empty (I will publish pictures to prove it). Tough it talks about the constant interruption of TV programs by the government, it fails to mention the rebellious attitude of TV stations.
