Chavez won't finish his period
It is clear to anyone thinking about the Venezuelan situation that president Chavez will not be able to finish his period. It is supposed to en in 2006, but, according to the constitution, by 2004 it would be possible to call for a referendum to end his presidency. Looking at the recent aproval ratings, Chavez' rating should continue to decrease at great speed. Considering that he has a stronghold of support and that the economy will not improve without unpopular measures, I calculate his support by 2004 to be around 7-12%. With that lack of support he will loose the referendum and the election afterwards against any candidate with resources.
The end of Chavez may come sooner and in ugly ways, but the political cost of trying to preserve him in his presidency at all costs
