Despite my dire predictions it seems common sense and force have prevailed. The National Guard forcefully retired the government thugs at the last possible minute. The signatures have arrived at the Electoral Council. They have 30 days to accept or reject the signatures. Then 60 days to call for elections if they accept them. This has been a big defeat for the most radical government supporters, but a victory for the decent part of the government. They have shown an inkling of fairness. My guess is that this was a show for Gaviria. Funny, I don't think it will help.

For the opposition it's also a victory. It has shown its supporters are willing to confront violence. So violence is no longer an efective weapon. Please, realize this and let us have peace.
