Who Owns Baseball Statistics?. [Slashdot]  If I compute and average or a percentage do I "own it"? This twist on IP is amazing in that all they really want is a way to print money.   This seems like one of a number of attempts to take the "public" out of public information and place a thousand tollgates on the information hyway.  Perhaps the easies solution is just a very short legal protection for "new intellectual property" ending at 1 year an then everyting is in the public domain forever.  Let the "leading edge" buy and pay for the right to early access to intellectual property and then ratchet the system by making that window very short (20 years of copyright is a vestage of the horse and buggy transport days).  The better way is simply open content in the first place for statistics of all things. -- BL
