From Sam's latest essay: "Developers in this field know all too well that reality is not quite so simple. With all the excitement and progress, there is still much that needs to be done to make interoperability not just simple, but downright automatic."
I'd wager to say that developers in this field know all too well that the reality is that interoperability will never be "downright automatic".

Mark Woods notes that human-readible documentation is important. Perhaps that's why wsdl document elements were invented? "The documentation element is allowed inside any WSDL language element." Seems like more people need to make use of this feature. In any case, this need not be an either/or situation. The more documentation the better, I would say. [Sam Ruby's Radio Weblog]
If you like javadoc, take a look at the new wsdldoc tool in the Web Services Toolkit. Still a work in progress, but it produces some nice, familiar looking output.
