Sun likely will join Web services group. The company may not be a member of a newly announced effort to get a grip on the fast-growing realm of Web services, but it could join soon, the head of Sun's software group says. [CNET News.com]

Keith: "I agree. Using the public UDDI for roll-over doesn't make sense. I mean using UDDI within the enterprise and behind the firewall." Private UDDI registries are closer to the "speed-dialer" concept but would still suffer from performance issues.  I just tend to lean more towards design-time binding for services as opposed to the runtime-binding model this scenario supposes.  I'd prefer all discovery to happen when the developer is writing the code.  That way, while the code is running, there are as few steps as possible -- fewer moving parts mean fewer opportunities for problems and much better performance.

Dave and Simon are quite understandably cynical about the new Web Services Interop consortium. It'll be interesting to see how things evolve.
