Prior to deploying Windows XP or any other client operating system, it is important to collect information about the existing desktop infrastructure. This will help organizations determine what steps need to be taken to prepare for the migration and mitigate risks. Most of the information should be collected through automated inventory tools or from existing databases with purchase, financial and contract information about the desktops. User information, such as location, department and title, should also be collected to help align system specifications with job functions.
