Wired News, 5/13/03: Verizon Launches Wi-Fi Hot Spots
CHICAGO -- Verizon Communications, the largest U.S. local phone company, on Tuesday launched a service that will provide customers with wireless Internet access on high-speed networks throughout New York City.
Verizon, based in New York, said it activated 150 Wi-Fi access points, or hot spots, at pay phones in the city and plans to activate 850 more by the end of the year. It said its deployment would mark the largest such initiative by an Internet service provider in a single U.S. city.

Computerworld, 5/12/03: AT&T speeds up global rollout of IP VPN services

AT&T Corp. last week outlined plans to expand its IP virtual private network (VPN) services globally, partly by accelerating an ongoing installation of technology based on the Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) standard.
AT&T is speeding up a rollout of 150 MPLS-based network points of presence in more than 50 countries this year, said Mike Jenner, the company's vice president of global IP network services. In addition, AT&T has formed a 500-person VPN integration consulting team and has made it possible for customers to order VPN setups and other managed Internet services electronically, Jenner said
