A significant shift in the client systems management market, which has been dominated for a decade or more by individual tools, is occurring as the market shifts toward bundled toolsets. Enterprises are focusing on driving down desktop and mobile management costs by rationalizing existing tools or implementing a suite of management tools that addresses core client management requirements (configuration management, imaging, migration, software distribution, application management and application packaging and asset tracking). This will trigger market consolidation during the next one to two years, leading 10 percent to 15 percent of the vendors in the market to fail or get acquired.

While companies continue to invest in server-based computing (SBC), most firms are evaluating all IT investments carefully. Some firms are deferring purchase decisions, starting with smaller deployments, or are attempting to use existing desktop management tools such as Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS). Nonetheless, SBC continues to deliver significant value around remote access to mobile workers, application management and deployment and business continuity planning. Citrix, the leading vendor in the SBC market, announced a significant shift in its positioning in March toward providing an “access infrastructure,” targeting end-user demand for flexible application access.
