Not everyone should have a personal computer. There. I've said it. You'll say I'm a techno-elitist, that I believe that some people should be excluded from the technology revolution. That's not true.

I believe that everyone should be part of the technology revolution. But I don't think PCs are the right platform for everyone because of their high complexity level and because of the harm that not understanding these systems can cause users.

Demand for managed security services, or outsourced security services, in North America and Europe has only slightly increased since our last market overview on the subject in 2000. This is remarkable, especially considering the steady consolidation and reduction of the vendor population. There are far fewer major vendors in the space than there were just two years ago. Many acquired their competitors, and some went out of business altogether. But even with this reduced net competition, spending for managed security services has risen only modestly. Today, we find a few focused service providers with bright outlooks and profitable books, and most others doing damage control. However, all of the vendors have created a rut for themselves through ineffective marketing and, as a result, have tainted the entire sector of managed security services with the sour taste of fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD), rather than painting a picture of value and benefit.
