Since we outsource much of our IT to hosting services and service providers, what should we do to ensure the effectiveness of our IT security?

The keys to your success will be a clearly worded service-level agreement and language in your contract regarding security. You should also assign an individual who serves as security “owner” or champion. In a well-managed outsourced arrangement, the risks are not significantly greater than managing all security tasks internally. So success is quite achievable.

August woke people to some new antics from virus writers. As the Blaster and SoBig worms spread to millions of PCs, concerns were raised—particularly by SoBig—about follow-on attacks that would coincide with September 11. Some analysts are worried that new strains of SoBig or features of the original variants could be slated to strike this week. This is a good time to take precautions.

The Register, 9/10/03:  MS amends anti-Blaster fix

Microsoft today issued an amended antidote to the Windows vulnerability infamously exploited by the Blaster worm.

Today's fix for flaws with Microsoft's implementation of Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) within its Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) framework supersede a patch Redmond issued in July. It also replaces a fix (MS01-48) involving a DoS risk MS issued two years ago.

Millions of PC users are volunteering their terminals' unused processing power to help analyze data and perform computer simulations for research into an AIDS cure, climate prediction or the mysteries of biological proteins.
