C|net, 7/29/04: Labor group: Microsoft offshoring work on Longhorn

update Microsoft is outsourcing some of the work related to its next-generation operating system to India, according to a labor group.
The WashTech organization said Wednesday that it obtained internal Microsoft documents showing that at least two of India's offshore outsourcing companies are working on the operating system dubbed Longhorn, which is expected in 2006. One of the documents indicates that a contract with India-based Infosys Technologies concerns a "Longhorn Migration Guide."

In this election year, offshore outsourcing is the hot-button economic issue. But just how many jobs are actually sent overseas? According to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of American jobs lost to "overseas relocations" totaled 4,633 during the first quarter of 2004. This accounts for only 2 percent of the nearly 240,000 jobs lost during that time. In fact, domestic outsourcing (jobs going from one American company to another) claimed more than twice as many positions (9,900) as offshore outsourcing did.

Antivirus firms don't have quick cures for PDA viruses yet

Antivirus companies have been warning for years that viruses will afflict handheld devices, and the day has apparently arrived: Both Symantec Corp. and Kaspersky Labs Ltd. have detected a backdoor Trojan horse program that can give an attacker complete control over a Pocket PC mobile device.
What's more, the antivirus firms don't have quick cures for PDA viruses like the data definitions they update for PCs when new viruses surface. Symantec and other antivirus companies do offer antivirus applications for mobile devices; the companies have previously tested such tools against viruses in the lab, such as the Dust virus developed last month.

While developers at Microsoft Corp. may be celebrating that they finished work on Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP, IT departments around the world now face the question on whether they should update their systems, or not.
IBM Corp., for one, is holding off on installing the security-focused update for Windows XP. In a note headlined "To patch -- or not to patch" posted Friday on its corporate intranet, IBM tells its employees not to download SP2 when it becomes available because of compatibility issues. A copy of the note was obtained by IDG News Service.

Microsoft Corp. has issued a warning about incompatibility issues in its customer relationship management suite caused by installing the Windows XP Service Pack 2.
In a Knowledge Base article, Microsoft states that its Business Solutions CRM application Version 1.0 running on the XP platform won't work if Service Pack 2 is installed. Microsoft urged those customers affected to upgrade to CRM and CRM Sales for Outlook 1.2 before installing XP Service Pack 2 on any clients.

Microsoft Corp. expects to finalize work on Service Pack 2 for Windows XP soon and the much-anticipated security-focused update should be available to users shortly thereafter, a company spokesman said yesterday.
Microsoft had hoped to wrap up work on SP2 this week. The software maker planned to announce the release to manufacturing of the code late Wednesday. However, those plans changed to ensure that the software meets quality standards.
