C|net, 9/1/04:  Software maker launches remote-access tools

Software maker 3am Labs on Wednesday announced three new remote-access products in its Logmein suite, which is aimed at mobile users.

3am Labs makes software that lets people access their desktop files through a secure connection over a network and remotely control their desktop PCs. The company's software also lets IT workers remotely fix PCs.

C|net, 8/31/04:  Veritas to buy maker of e-mail storage tools

update Veritas Software announced on Tuesday that it plans to acquire KVS in a move designed to expand its e-mail storage and archiving offerings.

Under the deal, Veritas will pay $225 million in cash for the privately held e-mail tools maker. Reading, England-based KVS sells software for storing and managing e-mail, functions that are gaining importance in corporate America, as regulatory changes force businesses to store many kinds of data, including e-mail, and make sure that it can be easily retrieved.

C|net, 9/1/04:  Spam volume keeps rising

Rising tides of spam are drowning the usefulness of e-mail, according to a new report from IDC.

Spam has accounted for 38 percent of the 31 billion e-mails sent each day in North America in 2004, up from 24 percent in 2002, the market researcher said.

Improved content filtering and antispam tools will help fight the problem, as will the growing use of alternative communications means, such as video conferencing and instant messaging software.

The New York Times, 9/1/04:  3 Planets Are Found Close in Size to Earth, Making Scientists Think 'Life'

The universe looked a little more familiar and friendlier yesterday.

The roll call of planets beyond the solar system swelled significantly with the announcement of a trio of newly discovered worlds much smaller than any previously discovered around other stars. The masses of these new planets are comparable to those of Neptune or Uranus in our solar system, ranging from about 14 to 20 times the mass of Earth.
