eWeek, 11/9/04:  EMC Keeps Laying Down SMB Track

EMC's recent acquisition of tiny Allocity Inc., the developer of an always-available e-mail storage solution, went virtually unnoticed by the storage world, but it may be indicative of a continuing trend at the company to expand its reach and better penetrate the small-business world.

The acquisition, which closed Oct. 22, gives EMC full access to Allocity's portfolio of products focused on lowering the TCO [total cost of ownership] of applications in the Windows environment. The Mountain View, Calif., company's flagship product is Live!Ex, a solution focused on reducing the cost of storage hardware and SAN (storage area network) administration for the Exchange environment.

C|net, 11/9/04:  IBM cranks up client software push

IBM stepped up its assault on the desktop software market with the introduction of new bundles of its Workplace software that are designed for medium-size businesses and for specific industries.

IBM's Workplace initiative is the company's plan to garner a larger share of the money spent by businesses on end-user productivity software--a market dominated by Microsoft's Office suite.

The Workplace software, which is being developed through IBM's Lotus division, is built around the company's Java-based WebSphere Portal software, which delivers applications and documents from servers to desktop PCs or handheld devices running Windows or Linux. The Workplace software can present information in a Web browser or so-called rich-client software, which has full graphical capabilities and can be used offline.

NOVEMBER 09, 2004 (IDG NEWS SERVICE) - A new variant of the MyDoom worm that exploits an unpatched flaw in Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer browser is in the wild and poses particular risk to home and small-business users, security experts warned this week.

The worm, which security firms dubbed MyDoom.AF, MyDoom.AH and MyDoom.AG, spreads by e-mail and exploits a recently discovered buffer-overflow vulnerability in Internet Explorer.

Dr. Ricart is the Managing Director of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Center for Advanced Research in San José, California. Previously, he had been Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Novell, Co-founder and CTO of CenterBeam, Director of the Computer Science Center at the University of Maryland College Park, Program Manager at Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ("DARPA") and the head of intramural research computer services at the National Institutes of Health. He has served on the board of public companies as well as non-profits including the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, EDUCOM, and BITNET.
