Herb Ritts died this week
Ritts, one of the better photographers in LA passed away as a result of pneumonia (a usual complication of people with AIDS). I've always admired his eye. Back in 1985 I had a chance to meet him, show him my portfolio, and interview for a position as photographers assistant. He was so gay it scared me, and thats probably why I didn't get the job. It must have been written all over my face.
In any case, I ended up working with a few other interesting photographers and even had a client or two myself. And on top of that got to hang out and dance with that famous model with the squeaky voice. The most fun ever while taking pictures, however, was the day I spent on the flight line with the USAF Thunderbirds. That was truly unforgettable
So what happened? Life. I went broke trying to get a career going as a photographer, fell into programming as a way to pay the bills about 12 years ago and found that coding shares many of the creative aspects that I used to enjoy when taking picture. (Its true !)
