Thinlets are fat on value.
I found Thinlets via Bob's blog. This is the first GUI technology in a while that's given me that "fuck me, how do they do that?!" feeling. See the overview on the website for how it's done - basically a very simple XML file defines the interface, and the call backs. Simple, beautiful, fast, free and tiny (26k library!). Wow.
Checkout the Web Start AmazonBrowser. It's about 40k. That's truly awesome. [rebelutionary]

Sun to fund open-source Java efforts. The computing giant announces a $3 million scholarship program to help software developers build open-source implementations of Java standards. [CNET News.com]
After listening to McNealy recently, this seems very strange.

Beyond Encapsulation Wrapping objects in web services is a bad idea, writes Adam Bosworth, an early champion of XML at Microsoft and now VP engineering at BEA Systems, in an article in XML & Web Services Magazine:
More on loosely coupled webservices, from, of all places, the Loosely Coupled Weblog. The Bosworth article that Philip references is a short read, but he sums up the points where I also take issue with the idea of passing objects across a SOAP interface.
[Gordon Weakliem's Radio Weblog]
A nice summary, although no really new points.
