Russell is switching back to 1.3.1
Switching Back. Yep... I'm switching back to Java 1.3 from 1.4. Once Kate turned me on to the fact that Mac OSX is still using 1.3 and there's not a real timeline yet for 1.4 to be available, I decided to back-track and write my projects using the JDK 1.3.1.
I think in general 1.3 is the standard and will be for a long time to come. Having bopped back and forth countless times now, I'm very frustrated at how many things that 1.4 breaks and how little it's been adopted. At first I was going to develop the Journal as a sort of 1.4 learning experience, but I decided that it was no fun writing code that no was going to use. [Russell Beattie Notebook]
I am using 1.4 for my latest project at work, but it that could be a questionable decision. Not too many products claim to support it yet. We are using Weblogic which is only certified for 1.3.1, but Weblogic Server seems to run fine on 1.4. Other parts such as the Business Process Studio seem to have issue with 1.4 though. There does not seem to be too much in 1.4 that is compelling. I think the only 1.4-specific feature we are using right now is the nested exceptions.
