Two U.S. pilots charged in deaths of Canadian soldiers
Two American pilots involved in the fatal bombing of Canadian soldiers
in Afghanistan last April have been charged with criminal offences.
F U L L S T O R Y [CBC News]"Both pilots also face counts relating to the improper firing of weapons. Schmidt failed to exercise appropriate flight discipline and did not comply with the rules for firing weapons. Umbach failed to maintain control and failed to ensure compliance with rules for firing weapons."Cowboys. So the pilots did not comply with the rules of engagement. But why did this ever become an issue? Who further up the chain of command failed to brief the pilots (scapegoats?) on the training excercise?

Gateway Adds AudioCube 5 System
Portland, ME (September 13, 2002)--Mastering facility Gateway Mastering
& DVD has purchased a Cube-Tec AudioCube 5 multichannel workstation for
immediate installation. The Gateway AudioCube is configured to support
multiple applications, including DVD-A authoring (CubeDVD-A), CD mastering,
restoration and multichannel DSD mastering.
[ProSound News]I was at an AES Convention in NYC three years ago when Bob came up to me asking me if I'd see the AudioCube. He was very excited about it and wanted to know what I thought. [I'm ashamed to say I still haven't had a look at it!] A while later I heard that the AudioCube didn't have a proper editor which made it a non-starter for me, and Bob I suppose. Things have obviously improved and finally Bob's a happy owner.

Of course the big opportunity for AOL is the vast music collection of Time-Warner. Publish low-rez scans of the music. Let me download them to a local computer system via AOL-Broadband. Monthly fee to participate. All the music I want. If I play the music using WinAmp, I get a one-click way to order the high-rez CD via snail mail. A way to make huge bucks on the libraries that aren't making any money. [Scripting News]It's so obvious. But of course I want to be able to buy hi-res versions of the audio!

Friday, September 13 12:03 AM. What's the absolute ultimate in peer-to-peer music sharing technology? Swapping iPods with somebody for a while. It's like being at a party and spending some time at the bookcase next to the stereo with your head crooked at a 90-degree angle, trying to figure out your host's overall taste in music...with the critical exception that you can load the whole smash into the trunk of your car and drive off. [More...] [Andy Ihnatko's YellowText]I subscribed to Andy's feed the instant I found out about it. This guy is funny! I read him in MacWorld for a while. He's brilliant. The kind of freewheeling humour you expect from a Robin Williams. One day I read something in a PC mag. It's "Andy" writer, the one who lightens things up, was just bloody awful. His 'humour' was mean-spirited and juvenile. Not witty at all. I thought to myself that here was another example of how the Mac and PC worlds are soooo different.

Andy Ihnatko on RSS. Andy writes, “RSS is one of those Really Cool Things that’s Just Starting To Go Big. It’s slick and it’s fairly sophisticated: your website can essentially ‘syndicate’ parts of its content to millions of client apps. That’s a ridiculous amount of cool.” [ranchero.com]Those of us in Radio land have been hip to this for some time.

-- Higher Ground The Blind Boys of AlabamaReal World (Virgin)Rating: ***Every true gospel singer believes in miracles. The Blind Boys of Alabama, who have been singing gospel for over 60 years, experienced a minor miracle last year, when they had their first Grammy-winning hit record. The Spirit of the Century did for the Blind Boys what O Brother, Where Art Thou? did for Ralph Stanley and what Buena Vista Social Club did for Compay Segundo. It pulled them out of the shadows and made them venerable. FULL STORY [The Globe and Mail: Arts]
