Duelling editorials, deconstructed
This weekend the Toronto Star has an editorial in favour of spending federal money to upgrade passenger rail service, and the Gazette has an editorial against it. The difference is that the Star editorial has cogent arguments: highway congestion, the expense of flying and the importance of maintaining train infrastructure for the future. The Gazette has no argument except that it doesn’t like the sight of money being spent, despite the bogus lede about the niceness of rail travel. Tant pis, you lose.

Muze CEO talks iTunes Music Store, retail music's future
Much of the information content of Apple's iTunes Music Store is provided by Muze Inc., a source of entertainment product information for music, books, videos and games. And the company's founder and CEO, Paul Zullo, feels that the online music experience will only improve in the days ahead. [MacCentral] 'Zullo -- who was a radio producer 25 years ago and an early adopter of CD technology -- sees the future of music as a mixture of physical formats such as CDs and downloadable music. He feels that CDs will be around for years to come as a high-quality sound carrier. Other formats such as SACDs (Super Audio CDs) and DVDs will also do well, he said. In fact, a great deal of classical music is being released on DVDs.
"Plus, many artists are covering all the bases," Zullo said. "For example, Bob Dylan was one of the first to have his catalog available at the iTunes Music Store. But many of his albums are now being released as SACDs. Eventually, I think we'll see the day where we'll be able to encode and decode on our computers with the highest playback possible."' I like this guy! What a relief it is to know that someone who's on the cutting edge of downloadable music also cares about sound quality and is thinking about the mid to long term.

macosxhints - All macosxhints.com Panther hints
'I believe there are 62 applications running. I actually left it this way for a day or so (I ran this test on the GM build) to see how it would work. The result? It worked fine! It was a bit slow if I switched to a non-active app (about two seconds to activate), but other than that, it was very usable. Most impressive, though, was the speed with with Exposé was able to calculate and minimize all the open windows. Quite fun to watch, too, especially in slow motion!'Nice dual wide monitor screen shot.
