Gracenote: 4. Using the CDDB service
I put in an AC/DC disc, but the service says it's ABBA! Why?

This should be extremely rare. This would mean that the disc in your CD-ROM drive just happens to have the exact same TOC as another disc in the database. The TOC is the "table of contents", the list of song lengths stored in the disc itself. Because of how the TOC is calculated it is extremely unlikely that two unrelated CDs would have exactly the same TOC. It does happen sometimes for discs with only one track, but the odds of this occurring go down with more tracks.

I was wondering how this was done. Pretty primitive. I'd imagined that I had to wait for masters to come back from the plant before I could submit to CDDB. But obviously I can use a reference copy of the master. This way I can control what goes to CDDB (ie, get the information correct) and the first customer who puts this disc in iTunes won't have to do any data entry.

MacDevCenter.com: Magnificent Seven: What's New for Users in QuickTime 7
The problem is that the optical audio out isn't as plug-and-play as you might think. TOSLINK, as this connector is actually called, has a standard whose only option for uncompressed PCM output is two-channel stereo. It does support compressed multi-channel formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS, and Apple's DVD Player supports these...but only because it's passing through the audio that was encoded when the DVD was authored.

Magnificent Seven: What's New for Users in QuickTime 7

Tiger is cool, but it's not the only new cat on the block. Apple has also released an updated version of QuickTime. Chris Adamson examines the user-visible features and changes in QT 7, including QT 7 Pro, renovations to the QuickTime Player application, and the implications of the powerful new H.264 video codec.

Apple - QuickTime - QuickTime Player
Do you think great video deserves great audio? We do, too. And QuickTime 7 Player delivers truly outstanding multi-channel audio. In fact, it provides you with up to 24 channels of audio. So if you watch a movie that offers surround sound, you’ll be amazed at the heightened audio experience you’ll enjoy from your Mac or PC and your surround-sound speakers. Tiger Mail Weirdness
I've had this happen a few times: I open a piece of mail and later on notice that the status is set to unread. I can't remember the steps I took previously but tonight I know that I opened and read the message, replied to it, sent the reply, opened another email, closed it and when I next looked at the inbox the email I'd just read and replied to was set to unread. I'm not sure exactly at what point the status got reset or if it was ever set to read.

Software Update Weirdness
I just got notification that there was a software update for Pro Application Support. I like to download the files, use the Software Update app to run the installer and then back the file up to a drive. Tonight I started to do just that. But after I had entered my password and agreed to the software license the Software Update window rolled up as usual as if to display the progress bar but then immediately rolled back down again. I tried this several times with the same response.

Finally I went to the Finder, double-clicked on the install package and everything proceeded went ahead as expected. Frist time I've had trouble with the Software Update app.

Address Book Weirdness
In Address Book I like to keep a couple of windows for contacts open. With Tiger, if I am updating a contact in the main window other windows which are open flash. A small display bug.

I like the idea of the new Birthdays Calendar. So I've removed the birthday reminders I had manually placed in iCal and put them in Address Book. But if I include the year of the birthday (handy if you are trying to keep track of someone's age) then an item appears in the iCal for every year they've had a birthday. This might be a bit of an annoyance when you are searching in iCal for events related to that person. You end up with a rather long list of entries.
