More on rental cars: For the last while I've been working under the convenient assumption that I already had all the insurance I needed on my license. This is a nice *idea* to have in your head while your checking the decline boxes on the rental agreement and saving the $10/day but is it actually true? I must be getting SOMETHING for the $55/year I pay for my license since Ontarians only renew every couple of years for a nominal fee.
Well here's the answer from MPI's website:
Driver Licence Costs
We charge a basic insurance premium on every Manitoba driver's licence. Collecting this premium ensures that all Manitoba drivers share the risk of accidents. It also provides drivers with $200,000 third party liability coverage if they're in an accident while driving an uninsured vehicle--as long as they didn't own the vehicle and didn't know it wasn't insured.
Uh right. 3rd party liability only helps the cars/people I crash into. It doesn't pay Enterprise for the damage I may do to their car. And even this coverage doesn't even apply since even though I don't own the vehicle, I can't very well claim I didn't know it was uninsured after signing a form in triplicate stating the opposite!
So it turns out I couldn't have been more wrong. My $55 bucks gets me jack squat.
