While subject to debate, many scientists believe that the Voyager 1 space probe launched in 1997 has reached the edge of the solar system. At a distance of 13.5 billion kilometers (90 astronomical units) from the sun, the craft’s sensors are detecting increasing numbers of energetic particles indicative of interstellar plasma.
