FISH Sticks

The Universal Transportable Memory Association (UTMA) released on Tuesday its specifications for a new flash memory format, Flash Internal Semiconductor Hard (FISH) drives.

MobileMag.com states it is a:

flash memory card standard that requires no adapters, cables or card readers. It simply plugs into any USB port, allowing information from your digital camera, PDA, stereo or other device to be transferred to any PC. Inaddition to universal communications, Fish Memory cards are smaller than both SD and xD picture cards, transfer data very quickly, and are rugged enough to carry in your pocket (using the available fob). Electronic devices using the Fish standard are already in development. The standard is not controlled by any individual supplier, but is open to everyone.

Extending the cute name there is the Baby FISH standard. From the UTMA:

Baby FISH are just younger cousins to the FISH Stick. They are 25% smaller, making them idea for very small devices like cell phones and text messengers. It also makes them 60% smaller footprint than SD, 50% smaller than Memory Stick Duo, 40% smaller than xD, and 30% smaller than even mini-SD.

Both FISH and Baby FISH cards can be plugged directly into a USB slot eliminating the need for a dedicated memory card reader or slot on your PC or device. No device makers have been named as supporting this new standard.
