A Piece of 'Snowcrash' Tech (Almost) Becomes Reality
This is so cool, well worth the download if you've got an NVidia card. In the book 'Snowcrash' by Neal Stephenson, Hiro gets a neat piece of software for his VR toolkit - a near realtime, massively zoomable globe that allows him to have a gods eye view of the earth down to metre resolution. Many have tried to produce something similar, but Earthviewer 3D is the nearest I've seen yet. The coverage of the globe is (obviously) not total but there's some great fun to be had - if they can integrate Hubble photos you could create your own version of Charles and Ray Eames 'Powers of Ten'!

Rant: Work Versus Home Development
So your sitting at home with some work to do and you think 'This will only take me a couple of days!' Why do you think this? If you were at work you know it would take a couple of weeks so why do you try and kid yourself it's going to be any different at home? Are you mad, do you think that somehow by being at home you will be an order of magnitude more efficient? Forget it, it's going to take as long, if not longer, than it would at work. (may not apply to writing documents, your mileage may vary)

OT: Who Wrote 'Fuck the Police'?
NWA did, a West Coast group whose members included Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. Public Enemy were a completely different group, completely different members, and East Coast to boot. The only link I can remember is that the Bomb Squad, Public Enemy's producers, produced Ice Cubes first solo album 'AmeriKKKas Most Wanted'. Why am I telling you this? There's a bit of a mix up going on and the huge amount of pointless facts about music that I have stored in my brain must be useful for something.

Catch Up
How come whenever something important happens (like the Communication Server) I'm either a) on holiday or b) incommunicado in some other way? Anyway, trying to catch up with all the blogs and news after the outage and finish a couple of personal things off. Sorry if it takes a while...

New DesDev Centers
Two new Des Dev centers have appeared - a .NET center and, not surprisingly, a Flash Communication Server center.

Executive Presentation Tutorial
Want to know how that killer executive presentation that Macromedia did a few weeks ago was done? Check out this tutorial from odopod, the company that produced it - Synchronizing a Macromedia Flash Presentation to streaming video

2 Fixed, 1 Dead
DSL fixed, TV Aerial fixed, The car....he dead. Poor Peugeot 205, we had a lot of fun, we did a lot of miles, but now after 10 years your time is up. You will be sadly missed (sniff)

It's Here : Flash Communication Server
"Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX provides a complete development and deployment platform for including audio, video and live data in your websites and Rich Internet Applications." - many people have been rabidly looking forward to this release. There's a trial download and commerical versions up - $499 for the basic, $4500 for the pro edition (gulp!) Hold on to your hats, it's going to be extra high volume on the boards and lists for a few days ;)

Broken
So far in the last 48 hours my DSL line has gone down, my car has conked out and my TV aerial stopped working (conclusive proof of the "things come in three's" hypothesis.) Hopefully I may get one or more of these working today but till then it's thin pipe hell so updates will be few and far between.
