"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

Fire Rumsfeld *now*.

[11:32:44 PM]
So, you think Richard Perle would have been forced out if the Iraq War had been a rose garden (as promised)? Or maybe you think being a corrupt, thieving bastard is suddenly enough to get you dumped? Or maybe you think the title he's giving up is mostly honorary, and resignation means just about nothing?

We say the case justifies the pre-emptive strike approach -- if Perle had just sued Hersch *before* the article was published, he'd still have his little title.

Looks to me like the military is completely hiding the extent of the casualties. Maybe things are so bad it would be dangerous to let Iraqis know. Maybe things are so bad it would be dangerous to let *Americans* know.

We heard a lot about the US Third Division when they were racing across the desert. Lately they've been fighting in Najaf for days. I wonder if the sandstorm knocked out some large percentage of their tanks. When the M-1 tank was in development, it would break down if it drove into a dusty area. One article I saw about four tanks crossing the Iraqi border to secure the oil fields said three of the four tanks broke in one way or another, requiring on-the-fly repairs. What does the Mother-of-all-Sandstorms do to our tanks?

There are some hints of fighting along supply lines. Fuel for the Third division has to go hundreds of miles through unsecured territory. The Marines that crossed the river at Nassiriya have moved a hundred miles. How do they get fuel?

Maybe it would be prudent to pull back and wait for reinforcements? Support the troops: keep them alive!
