MacDevCenter: Controlling Your Mac with AppleScript and Java

"AppleScript, while a fantastic language for running scripts locally, has minimal support for doing anything else, like sockets or serving Web pages. This is where AppleScript and Java form a powerful team. Scott D.W. Rankin shows you how to put this dynamic duo to work to control your Mac from remote locations."

Web Entourage Software's Tim Conner notes that iChatStatus version 1.2.0 includes scripts that use the proximity feature of Sony Ericsson Clicker to automatically update your iChat availability status based on physical proximity to your computer. Since AppleScript can drive shell scripts, I suspect that AppleScripters have the opportunity to script many of the application's features.

Mac OS X Hints: Running scripts only once per day

Anonymous: "I'm a cron (Cronnix) user, but because of my erratic work schedule, I occasionally need to run a cron job manually before its scheduled time. The problem is that it runs again via cron when its time rolls around. The following script uses AppleScript properties to avoid delivering the same payload twice in any one (calendar) day." ...
