QUOTE OF THE DAY "The world will be awaiting Wednesday's presentation of specific evidence by Secretary of State Colin Powell concerning Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction. As an acknowledged voice of moderation, his message will carry enormous weight in shaping public opinion. But even if his effort is successful and lies and trickery by Saddam Hussein are exposed, this will not indicate any real or proximate threat by Iraq to the United States or to our allies." - - Jimmy Carter RHINO HERE: The Regime that REALLY needs changing has been leaking propaganda that Powell will reveal proof that Iraqi officials have lied to inspectors. Yellow journalism available in this weeks "Newsweek", or check out the "Reuters" report about the Time article: Spy Tapes Show Iraqi Deceit, Magazine Reports Meanwhile, the periodical "Editor & Publisher" reports that in spite of shrub's STOU address & the UN Inspectors' report, few newspapers have changed their editorial stances with the great majority remaining skeptical of an early strike and continuing to advocate multilateral cooperation and war as a last resort. Bush, Blix Don't Change Newspapers' Positions Whatever "proof" Powell delivers to the UN on Wednesday, Jimmy Carter has released a statement that effectively PREEMPTS it (unless it shows a missile being launched from Bagdad to Houston). Come on Colin! Show us the beef! Show us the "imminent threat!" If they think cell phone recordings of national leaders lying are grounds for preemptive strikes, then just about every country on the globe is fair game. But then, let's not give shrub any more ideas. Carter's statement is today's BOTTOM LINE. And then there was Nelson Mandela last week laying into shrub & Blair. He said, "Why is the United States behaving so arrogantly? Is it because the Secretary-General of the United Nations is now a black man? They never did that when Secretary-Generals were white." Mandela Sharply Criticises Bush and Blair on Iraq Stance (allafrica.com) http://allafrica.com/stories/200301300784.html Space Shuttle Thoughts - What If there were nukes aboard? I want to take a moment to express appropriate grief for the families who lost loved ones in the Space Stuttle accident this weekend. But then I'd like to take a few hours to mention my grief for the tens of thousands of Iraqi people who have suffered & died due directly to U.S. sanctions against the import of medicines into that country for the last 10 years. Personally, I've always had a hard time with the idea of so many millions of our tax dollars going to blasting off space ships instead of providing food, medical care and shelter to needy Americans and other suffering people in the world. I realize many scientific discoveries made for the space program filter down to the people... http://www.thespaceplace.com/nasa/spinoffs.html#industry ...but I'd be willing to give up use of velcro, WD-40 & even duct tape in exchange for a world with not only less suffering, but also less international anger & attempts at revenge. On Monday, Pacifica Radio's Amy Goodman, on her ever vigilant national radio show, "Democracy Now!" hosted a former NASA engineer who called for a moratorium on shuttle fights six months before Columbia exploded. She also had as guest a Texas sheriff who warned of radioactive debris as the Bush Administration pushes for nuclear-powered spaceships. It was a fascinating and sometimes fearful conversation on nukes in space and the militarization of the heavens with Dr. Michio Kaku, Karl Grossman and Bruce Gagnon. If you missed the debut of the new left leaning TV talk show, "The Active Opposition" hosted by Peter Coyote, it will re-air several times this week on WorldLink TV which is available on both Direct TV (Channel 375) & DISH Network (Channel 9410) at the times listed below. This first episode entitled "Iraq: Eyewitness Reports" featured an interview with Sean Penn on his trip to Iraq and included other eyewitnesses such as Scott Ritter, former U.N. weapons inspector, Dennis Halliday, former head of the U.N Oil-for-Food program, and a selection of freelance and staff reporters from mainstream and alternative media. You won't see this stuff on the majors. Also on WorldLink TV is the only U.S. nationally broadcast TV series on Indigenous People's issues, "First People's TV" curated by yours truly. This week's episode, entitled, "Healing The Hurt" is also like nothing you'll ever see on the majors. Here's a blurb & show times. In 1989, twenty five adult survivors of various Native American boarding and residential schools in both the United States and Canada gathered at the Alkali Lake Indian Reserve in British Columbia, Canada to attend a four-day intensive workshop on healing the hurt and shame of the demeaning Native boarding school experience. This documentary takes an intimate look at the painful but rewarding healing process. The boarding school system was established, in both the United States and Canada, to forcibly assimilate Native peoples into mainstream society. A major force for breaking the cultures and traditions, this system stripped the Native peoples of role models and skills for healthy parenting and family life, leaving them instead institutionalized with models for low self-esteem and abuse. THE BOTTOM LINE A Statement By President Carter: An Alternative To War, 31 Jan 2003 Despite marshalling powerful armed forces in the Persian Gulf region and a virtual declaration of war in the State of the Union message, our government has not made a case for a preemptive military strike against Iraq, either at home or in Europe. Recent vituperative attacks on U.S. policy by famous and respected men like Nelson Mandela and John Le Carré, although excessive, are echoed in a Web site poll conducted by the European edition of TIME magazine. The question was "Which country poses the greatest danger to world peace in 2003?" With several hundred thousand votes cast, the responses were: North Korea, 7 percent; Iraq, 8 percent; the United States, 84 percent. This is a gross distortion of our nation's character, and America is not inclined to let foreign voices answer the preeminent question that President Bush is presenting to the world, but it is sobering to realize how much doubt and consternation has been raised about our motives for war in the absence of convincing proof of a genuine threat from Iraq...
