QUOTE OF THE DAY "We need to start asking why is war considered to be an instrument of policy. Inspections are an adequate substitute for war, diplomacy is a substitute for war, human relations are a substitute for war, and so I think that there is no case made for war." - - US Representative Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio RHINO HERE: Actor David Clennon, star of the TV series "The Agency" (formally on "Thirty Something"), has a pack of right wingers after his job, led by sleezebag (lean whichever way works) politico, Dick Morris. Clennon was recently a guest on Sean Hannity's radio show. Hannity is Rush Limbaugh's favorite guest host when the supreme rushbo is off doing whatever he does when he's off the air. During that broadcast, Clennon said the following: "The moral climate within the ruling class in this country is not that different from the moral climate within the ruling class of Hitler's Germany... I'm not comparing Bush to Adolf Hitler - because George Bush, for one thing, is not as smart as Adolf Hitler. And secondly George Bush has much more power than Adolf Hitler ever had." He forgot to mention that the main difference between shrub & Adolf is that Adolf was actually elected to office. So now Dick Morris's website "vote.com" is featuring a poll - for or against - whether Clennon should be fired from his job. Join the Rhino. Take 2 minutes to vote "No" to firing Clennon - not just cause he has the right to say what he thinks, but also cause he's right. http://www.vote.com/vote/60025734/index.phtml?cat=4075633 I wonder if Hannity or Rush or any significant percentage of the American populace are aware that shrub's Grandpappy, Prescott Bush, financed the Nazis. Didn't know that? Punch this into your search engine = "prescott bush nazi". Kucinich For President! The former child mayor of Cleveland, Dennis Kucinich, now a democratic Congressman from Ohio, is throwing his hat into the ring to run for President. An outspoken, intelligent voice against shrub's war, he has taken his anti-war stance further than any statesman in U.S. history by proposing that the government of the United States Of America have a Department of Peace. http://www.house.gov/kucinich/action/peace.htm Kucinich, now 56, spoke at the protest last Saturday in New York City, then traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to announce he's in. Iowa's where the Democratic nominating process will begin with caucuses next Saturday. He declared, "There's something fundamentally wrong with the direction this country is heading in. I'm stepping forward because someone has to say, `Hold it! Everything needs to be changed at every level of society.'" COVERAGE OF THE KUCINICH ANNOUNCEMENT BOSTON'S WBUR CNN NY TIMES The United States of America Department Of Peace Check out a bit of Kucinich's proposal: "The mission of the Department shall: hold peace as an organizing principle; endeavor to promote justice and democratic principles to expand human rights; strengthen nonmilitary means of peacemaking; promote the development of human potential; work to create peace, prevent violence, divert from armed conflict and develop new structures in nonviolent dispute resolution; and take a proactive, strategic approach in the development of policies that promote national and international conflict prevention, nonviolent intervention, mediation, peaceful resolution of conflict and structured mediation of conflict." "The Department will create and establish a Peace Academy, modeled after the military service academies, which will provide a 4 year concentration in peace education. Graduates will be required to serve 5 years in public service in programs dedicated to domestic or international nonviolent conflict resolution." So I want to take the remainder of today's blog to call your attention to 2 courageous speeches recently given by 2 Democratic Senators. The first was given by another Presidential contender, Rep. John Kerry, on Tuesday, February 11th at the John F. Kennedy Library Forum in Boston. His speech focused on the environment & energy independence. the full text is at: http://kerry.senate.gov/high/record.cfm?id=190261

The Bottom Line today is the second of the speeches. It may be one of the most important addresses given on the Senate floor in a long time, yet it was barely noticed by the tri-letter press corps. Given by Senator Robert Byrd, Democrat from West Virginia, it attempts to evoke some kind of passionate response from his otherwise asleep at the wheel fellow representatives. Good on him for standing up strong. Rhino guesses that's why they call him, "The Dean Of The Congress". We Stand Passively Mute Speech by Senator Robert C. Byrd, On the Senate Floor, 2/12/03 To contemplate war is to think about the most horrible of human experiences. On this February day, as this nation stands at the brink of battle, every American on some level must be contemplating the horrors of war. Yet, this Chamber is, for the most part, silent -- ominously, dreadfully silent. There is no debate, no discussion, no attempt to lay out for the nation the pros and cons of this particular war. There is nothing. We stand passively mute in the United States Senate, paralyzed by our own uncertainty, seemingly stunned by the sheer turmoil of events. Only on the editorial pages of our newspapers is there much substantive discussion of the prudence or imprudence of engaging in this particular war. And this is no small conflagration we contemplate. This is no simple attempt to defang a villain. No. This coming battle, if it materializes, represents a turning point in U.S. foreign policy and possibly a turning point in the recent history of the world....
