Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL) via Democrats.com AP reports, "A German satirical magazine could be to blame for a smelly package of bones received last week by a Florida congresswoman who proposed exhuming the remains of American veterans buried in France and Belgium and shipping them home. More might be on the way to the offices of U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Brooksville, thanks to a 'Bones for Peace' campaign by the German magazine Titanic. The monthly encouraged readers to mail bones to Brown-Waite in response to her proposal. She filed the American Heroes Repatriation Act last month because France wouldn't support war with Iraq... On Friday, Brown-Waite's office received a small package with a strong odor. A bomb technician X-rayed the package, postmarked from Germany, and saw what appeared to be chicken bones. Titanic's website lists the address of Brown-Waite's office and encourages readers to send the bones with the message: 'The boys are coming home.'" http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/state/5535651.htm FBI TARGETING MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD FOR PEACE SONG AND ANTI-WAR ACTIVITIES! Looks like its more than just the Dixie Chicks coming under fire for speaking out against the war... Bay Area Hip Hop artist Michael Franti and his group Spearhead while enjoying tremendous fan support are being surveilled by the FBI...Recently members of Michael Franti's band got some late night visits from the FBI who were concerned about is anti-war songs and activities. He explained what's been going the other day on the excellent radio show Democracy Now Here's a transcript of that interview courtesy of Democracy Now: http://www.democracynow.org/franti.htm. Protest Against War Yusuf Islam, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, on his new recording of "Peace Train" "The present battle we see for global dominance, I believe, is nothing more than a clash of egos. So with Angel of War, I decided to revisit my legacy of music again and remold another old track, to reflect my thoughts and concerns about the questions to be asked of war today. What many people don't understand is that there will always be an enemy: the egotistical soul within. The nature of Man is already prone to earthly lusts such as 'greed' and 'envy'. Together with 'pride', the three primal vices have plagued the human being since his first appearance on the bloodstained pages of Time. Another Bosnia is not what the world needs; the devastation and suffering seen of recent history is ample evidence to support the view of every conscientious objector - of which I am one. Let the words of the songs speak for themselves. Peace be with you" http://www.yusufislam.org.uk/articlepeacetrain.htm http://catstevens.com/ WEEKEND TV TIP: Know your enemy - Dr. Paul Wolfowitz Two key members of the President's war cabinet, Dr. Paul Wolfowitz, Deputy Secretary of Defense and Gen. THE BOTTOM LINE Move over Rumi. Here come Rummie The Poetry of D.H. Rumsfeld; Recent works by the secretary of defense. By Hart Seely, Slate, MSN, 4/2/03 Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is an accomplished man. Not only is he guiding the war in Iraq, he has been a pilot, a congressman, an ambassador, a businessman, and a civil servant. But few Americans know that he is also a poet. Until now, the secretary's poetry has found only a small and skeptical audience: the Pentagon press corps. Every day, Rumsfeld regales reporters with his jazzy, impromptu riffs. Few of them seem to appreciate it. But we should all be listening. Rumsfeld's poetry is paradoxical: It uses playful language to address the most somber subjects: war, terrorism, mortality. Much of it is about indirection and evasion: He never faces his subjects head on but weaves away, letting inversions and repetitions confuse and beguile. His work, with its dedication to the fractured rhythms of the plainspoken vernacular, is reminiscent of William Carlos Williams'. Some readers may find that Rumsfeld's gift for offhand, quotidian pronouncements is as entrancing as Frank O'Hara's. And so Slate has compiled a collection of Rumsfeld's poems, bringing them to a wider public for the first time. The poems that follow are the exact words of the defense secretary, as taken from the official transcripts on the Defense Department Web site. The Unknown As we know, There are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know There are known unknowns. That is to say We know there are some things We do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The ones we don't know We don't know. -Feb. 12, 2002, Department of Defense news briefing Happenings You're going to be told lots of things. You get told things every day that don't happen. It doesn't seem to bother people, they don't- It's printed in the press. The world thinks all these things happen. They never happened. Everyone's so eager to get the story Before in fact the story's there That the world is constantly being fed Things that haven't happened. All I can tell you is, It hasn't happened. It's going to happen. -Feb. 28, 2003, Department of Defense briefing The Situation Things will not be necessarily continuous. The fact that they are something other than perfectly continuous Ought not to be characterized as a pause. There will be some things that people will see. There will be some things that people won't see. And life goes on. -Oct. 12, 2001, Department of Defense news briefing MORE RUMMIES POETRY AVAILABLE AT: http://slate.msn.com/id/2081042/ "RHINO'S BLOG" is the responsibility of Gary Rhine.
