THE QUOTE FOR THE WEEKEND
"The people booing were my friends and relatives. I asked them to do it to make the rest of the country think that not all Hollywood people are liberals."
- - Michael Moore (to the press, backstage at the Oscars)

APRIL 26th IN HISTORY
1989 -- Lucille Ball comedienne/actress dies at 78 of a massive heart attack. Among the better known celebrities blacklisted during the 1950s witch hunts conducted by liberals & conservatives was Lucille Ball, whose experience was atypical in that she recovered her career & popularity.

Ball's grandfather had been an old railroad man who idolized Eugene Debs & convinced young Lucy to register to vote in California as a Communist. Years later when her "crime" was discovered, the blacklisters banned Lucy from the studios, thus ending a promising movie career. She fought back by forming her own production company & making the well-known television series "I Love Lucy."

RHINO HERE:
As is my weekend habit, I give you a mix of politically related entertainment news & outright (or out-left) political satire. Current events can provide plenty of reasons not to lighten up, but hey, remember what the wise old ancestors of the hippies (the beatniks) used to say, "If you don't have a sense of humor about it, it's not very funny, man."

Dixie Chicks' Nude Protest
Reuters, April 25 2003
The Dixie Chicks, Emily Robison, left, Natalie Maines, center, and Martie Maguire, are featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. The three women of country music band the Dixie Chicks appear nude on the cover of a weekly showbiz magazine in a defiant answer to a backlash over their opposition to the war in Iraq.

The New York Post newspaper yesterday carried a reproduction of the Entertainment Weekly magazine picture in which the Grammy-award winning women wore only contradictory slogans painted on their bodies, including "Opinionated", "Traitors", "Saddam's Angels", "Dixie Sluts" and "Proud Americans"...

The Boss On The Dixie Chicks & What's Un-American
The Dixie Chicks have taken a big hit lately for exercising their basic right to express themselves. To me, they're terrific American artists expressing American values by using their American right to free speech. For them to be banished wholesale from radio stations, and even entire radio networks, for speaking out is un-American.

The pressure coming from the government and big business to enforce conformity of thought concerning the war and politics goes against everything that this country is about - namely freedom. Right now, we are supposedly fighting to create freedom in Iraq, at the same time that some are trying to intimidate and punish people for using that same freedom here at home.

I don't know what happens next, but I do want to add my voice to those who think that the Dixie Chicks are getting a raw deal, and an un-American one to boot. I send them my support.

Dear Abby, I am a sailor in the US Coast Guard. (spoof)
My parents live in the suburb of Philadelphia and one of my sisters, who lives in Bensenville, is married to a transvestite. My father and mother have recently been arrested for growing and selling marijuana and are currently dependent on my other two sisters, who are prostitutes in Jersey City.

I have two brothers, one who is currently serving a non-parole life sentence in Attica for rape and murder of a teenage boy in 1994. The other brother is currently being held in the Wellington Remand Center on charges of incest with his three children.

I have recently become engaged to marry a former prostitute who lives in the Bronx and indeed is still a part-time "working girl" in a brothel. However, her time there is limited, as we hope to open our own brothel with her as the working manager. I am hoping my two sisters would be interested in joining our team. Although I would prefer them not to prostitute themselves, at least it would get them off the street, and hopefully the heroin...anyway...

Abby, my problem is this: I love my fiance' and look forward to bringing her into the family and of course want to be totally honest with her.... Should I tell her about my cousin who voted for BUSH?

Signed, Worried About My Reputation

22 Rules for Being a Good Republican

1) You have to believe that the nation's 8-year prosperity prior to W's administration was due to the work of Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush, but that today's growing deficit and rising gas prices are all Clinton's fault.

2) You have to believe that those privileged from birth achieve success all on their own.

3) You have to be against government programs, but expect Social Security checks on time.

4) You have to believe that government should stay out of people's lives, yet you want government to regulate only opposite-gender marriages and what your official language should be.

5) You have to believe that pollution is ok, so long as it makes a profit.

6) You have to believe in prayer in schools, as long as you don't pray to Allah or Buddha.

7) You have to believe that only your own teenagers are still virgins....
