QUOTE OF THE DAY "If, in the shadow of the unilateralist power niche that the United States will occupy in the foreseeable future, its citizens are pressured by their government, their communities and their neighbors to speak with one cautious voice, we will have saved Iraq and damned ourselves. In a democratic society, the only treason is silence." - - Anna Quindlen, (Newsweek columnist, 4/21/03) APRIL 25th IN HISTORY: 1846 -- Mexico: Mexican forces obligingly attack a US "scouting party" sent by U.S. President James Polk into disputed territory between the Nueces & Rio Grande Rivers in hopes of provoking just such a skirmish. The incident was used by the expansionist Congress as an excuse to start the Mexican-American War, during which the US seized California. Rhino wonders how many times white folks in California have told Mexican folks to, "Go back where you came from!" RHINO HERE: It's come to my attention that many Blog readers are not aware of the amazing resource we Americans have in what Rhino refers to as, "The Little Radio Network That Could." If you have not been listening to the Pacifica Radio Network via any of their Sister stations... KPFA (Berkeley), KPFK (Los Angeles), KPFT (Houston), WBAI (New York) and WPFW (Washington DC). ... then you haven't really been getting the news. If you don't live in one of those cities, you can hear Pacifica news programming via the internet at a variety of sites. Check it out at: http://www.pacifica.org You may have heard about attempts last year to shut Pacifica down. Government honchos claimed it was due to a lack of funding. Everyone knew it was because of Pacifica's staunchly progressive perspective. If I'm near a radio or a web connected computer in the mornings, I listen to "Democracy Now" & always wonder why the stories that Amy Goodman covers don't get out on the tri-letters. Then I remember who owns the tri-letters. http://www.democracynow.org/about.htm In the afternoons, if I can, I catch Pacifica's Peace Watch http://pacifica.org/programs/peacewatch/index.html and/or Free Speech Radio News http://www.fsrn.org/ Today's RHINO'S BOTTOM LINE is an in depth profile of Amy Goodman & Democracy Now from last Sunday's New York Newsday. Please don't be relying on just the tri-letter network news & Rhinos Blog for your info. In an age where the major media is acting like bought & paid for pom pom girls for the government, it's up to individual citizens to keep themselves informed. Did someone say they think they're getting all the news stories they need from CNN? Did I hear that? Well, then get a load of The 9-11 Timeline. Then you'll know what Rhino's trying ta tell ya. An Advocate for Advocacy Amy Goodman believes her obligation to listeners - half a million a week tune in to her radio program, 'Democracy Now!' - is to be fair and accurate, not necessarily objective By Fred Bruning, NY Newsday. 4/21/03 Amy Goodman, intrepid radio voice of the left and host of the "Democracy Now!" public affairs program, once turned out 1,000 loaves of bread a week for a whole-grain bakery collective in Maine. Co-ops and groceries around the state loved the hearty products, but schools wouldn't buy. "We couldn't compete with Wonder Bread," Goodman recalled. Some might see a parallel between Goodman's yeasty days in Bar Harbor 20 years ago and her work now for the listener-sponsored Pacifica broadcasting group. The Sunflour collective was a local enterprise offering an alternative to the fluffy fare of big business and, though she doesn't describe it in quite those terms, Goodman makes clear her job as a journalist is to retrieve the protein sifted out by what she calls the "corporate media."...
