QUOTE OF THE DAY "...There are those who will consider it their duty, as friends of the Negro people, to tell us to revile him, to flee, even from the presence of his memory, to save ourselves by writing him out of the history of our turbulent times. Many will ask what Harlem finds to honor in this stormy, controversial and bold young captain - and we will smile. Many will say turn away - away from this man, for he is not a man but a demon, a monster, a subverter and an enemy of the black man - and we will smile. They will say that he is of hate - a fanatic, a racist - who can only bring evil to the cause for which you struggle! And we will answer and say to them : Did you ever talk to Brother Malcolm? Did you ever touch him, or have him smile at you? Did you ever really listen to him? Did he ever do a mean thing? Was he ever himself associated with violence or any public disturbance? For if you did you would know him. And if you knew him you would know why we must honor him..." - - Ossie Davis (Eulogy delivered at the funeral of Malcolm X, Faith Temple Church Of God, 2/27/65) MAY 19th IN HISTORY: 1925 - - Malcolm X is born, as Malcolm Little, in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother, Louis Norton Little, was a homemaker occupied with the family's eight children. His father, Earl Little, was an outspoken Baptist minister and avid supporter of Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. RHINO HERE: The Democratic presidential candidates met again Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa to address a thousand members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The LA Times reported, "From the pledge by Gephardt to pursue an international minimum wage, to the promise by Edwards to give workers greater representation on corporate boards, to the call by dark-horse Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio to repeal the North American Free Trade Agreement, the candidates wooed the crowd of activists by highlighting the most liberal aspects of their agenda." AFSCME is a large & politically effective union within the AFL-CIO. Nearly 1.3 million members, their early endorsement of Clinton/Gore in the 92 primary, when most industrial unions were supporting Sen. Tom Harkin, was key to Clinton's win. Seems Dennis Kucinich was the favorite. Democratic White House Contenders Focus Criticism on Bush By John Whitesides, Reuters, 5/17/03 A focus group of 30 union members in Iowa, which holds the first nominating contest in January, found Kucinich with the highest overall rating and Sharpton, Gephardt and Dean right behind, pollster Celinda Lake said. "I loved what Kucinich feels in his gut and how he supports labor; I think he gained a lot of support today," Michael Arken of Portland, Oregon, said after the forum. Democratic White House Contenders Focus Criticism Bill Clinton had good words about Howard Dean last week. Clinton: Dems Can Win on Clear Platform via Dem.com "Former President Clinton said Wednesday night that the Democrats seeking the White House have a chance to win in 2004 if they quit bickering and develop a clear philosophy with a national security element. 'I think on balance they're doing pretty well,' Clinton said in an interview with The Associated Press. 'They need to keep making their philosophy clear.' Clinton made the comments after a private session with the Democratic Leadership Council.. Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is described as very liberal by many following the presidential race, Clinton said, 'but look at what he did as governor of Vermont.' Clinton described Dean's accomplishments with health care in his home state and his proposal to promote a national health care plan with a modest price tag as 'New Democrat' positions... And Clinton didn't hesitate when he was asked the overriding question: Can Bush be beaten? 'You can always be beaten,' Clinton said with a smile. 'I could have been beaten in 1996.'" Clinton: Dems Can Win on Clear Platform The British coverage of the Jessica Lynch story - Soon to be a major movie. Saving Private Lynch : 'One of the Most Stunning Pieces of News Management Ever Conceived' "Jessica Lynch became an icon of the war, and the story of her capture by the Iraqis and her rescue by US special forces became one of the great patriotic moments of the conflict. But her story is one of the most stunning pieces of news management ever conceived... the Pentagon claimed that Lynch had stab and bullet wounds, and that she had been slapped about on her hospital bed and interrogated... But doctors in Nasiriya say they provided the best treatment they could for the soldier in the midst of war. She was assigned the only specialist bed in the hospital and one of only two nurses on the floor... 'I examined her, I saw she had a broken arm, a broken thigh and a dislocated ankle,' said Dr Harith a-Houssona, who looked after her... 'There was no [sign of] shooting, no bullet inside her body, no stab wound - only road traffic accident.'... The Pentagon had been influenced by Hollywood producers of reality TV and action movies, notably Black Hawk Down" -- i.e. Jerry Bruckheimer. http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,956255,00.html RHINO'S BOTTOM LINE today is a side of the Saudi Arabia terrorist attacks we didn't hear about on Meet The Press et al. Vinnell's Army [and Alleged CIA] Ties May Have Made Company a Target Bloomberg reports: "The car-bomb attacks on three residential compounds in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that killed nine Vinnell Corp. employees have triggered alarm bells among the hush- hush coterie of some 200 firms that, like Vinnell, specialize in 'sutling.' That is, the business of supplying U.S. military operations abroad with logistical support and of training foreign armies in the art of war. 'They are in the terrorist cross-hairs and being targeted,' says P.W. Singer, an analyst at the Brookings Institution... Adds former Central Intelligence Agency Director James Woolsey, 'These companies need to be concerned. It's of extraordinary importance.' There's nothing new in companies capitalizing from combat, or having to pay the ultimate price in lives. Singer estimates military consulting firms with names such as Executive Outcomes, Armor Holdings Inc., Dyncorp Inc. and MPRI rake in an industry wide total of $100 billion annually." Vinnell is suspected of being a CIA front. Vinnell's Army Ties Al Qaeda Hated the Vinnell Corporation The Age.com reports: "The bloody attacks in Riyadh are telling because of their targets, in particular the Vinnell Corporation [a suspected CIA front]. The residential compound and the offices used by Vinnell were hit, killing nine of the company's employees and injuring several others, two critically. Al-Qaeda has a particular hatred for the US Vinnell Corporation because it trains the Saudi Arabian National Guard, the country's internal security force and an integral part of the Saudi military forces. Vinnell, under contract to the US Army, employs about 800 people in Saudi Arabia including 300 Americans. Vinnell recently came under the financial control of giant US defence contractor Northrop. Vinnell's relationship with Saudi Arabia over nearly three decades has been intriguing and controversial. For five years until 1997 it was owned by the Carlyle group, a defence and investment house close to the Bush family. Several former Republican cabinet ministers sat on Carlyle's board."
